Types of storage

Not all storage is the same

The expensive mistake is paying for a climate controlled vault when a compound would do — or storing a classic outdoors to save £80 a month. Here's what each actually gives you.[2]

Climate controlled

Humidity held around 50–60% in a sealed, insulated building. The standard for anything with original paint, chrome or leather.

Managed indoor

    Demand spikes every autumn as owners lay cars up for winter, and the best facilities fill fast. Booking in summer gives you more choice and a stronger position on annual rates.

    Ask what the monthly price includes

    Most managed facilities include the space, security, a battery conditioner and periodic checks. Exercise runs, detailing, transport and MOT arrangement are almost always extra.

    Store outside the M25

    Property costs drive storage pricing. Moving just outside London can halve the monthly bill for a comparable level of care.

    Match the storage to the car

    A modern daily driver rarely needs a dehumidified vault for three months. A pre-1990 classic with original paint usually does.

    Check the insurance position in writing

    Some facilities insure stored vehicles under their own policy; at others your car stays on your laid-up cover. Never assume — get it confirmed.

    Ask about the minimum term

Frequently asked questions

Can you leave a trickle charger on a car battery all the time?

Only if it's a smart charger, also called a battery conditioner or maintainer. These switch to a maintenance mode once the battery is full and can stay connected for weeks or months. An old-style trickle charger keeps pushing current in until you unplug it, so leaving one connected will overcharge the battery and shorten its life.

Do car storage bubbles work?

Powered bubbles do what they claim: fans keep filtered air moving around the car, which stops condensation forming even when the garage itself is damp. The catch is that they need mains power all the time to stay inflated, and they take more effort than a cover. Unpowered bubbles and non-breathable covers can trap moisture against the car instead.

How do I take my car off SORN?

Tax it. There's no separate form to cancel a SORN: taxing the car online, by phone or at a Post Office ends the SORN automatically. Before you do, make sure the car is insured for the road and has a valid MOT if it needs one.

What does SORN mean?

SORN stands for Statutory Off Road Notification. It's how you tell DVLA you're keeping a vehicle off the road, for example in a garage or on a drive. Once it's in place you don't need to tax or insure the vehicle, but you can't keep it on a public road or drive it, except to a pre-booked MOT.

Can you store a car in a storage unit?

Sometimes. Most indoor self-storage rooms won't take a car: Big Yellow, for example, bans petrol, oil, batteries and tyres from its rooms, and offers cars a separate parking space instead. Drive-up units, lock-up garages and shipping containers on secure sites often do accept cars. Always check the licence before you sign.

Do car dehumidifiers work?

Dehumidifier bags work for what they're designed for: soaking up the small amount of moisture that makes windscreens mist up in a car you drive every day. They can't keep up with a leak, dry out wet carpets, or protect a car stored for months in a damp garage. For a stored car, you need to dehumidify the space, not just the cabin.
